Mandarin Oriental, Canouan Reopens After Hurricane Beryl With a New Resilience Fund

Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm, struck the Caribbean on July 1, 2024, forcing Mandarin Oriental, Canouan to close along with the rest of the island's resort infrastructure. What followed was what the resort itself has called a remarkable recovery effort in record time, culminating in an official reopening on November 15, 2024, months ahead of what a storm of that severity might typically require.

Rather than treat the reopening as simply a return to normal, the resort used it to launch the Canouan Resilience Fund, donating 10% of revenue from every guest stay booked from November 15 onward toward hardening the island's infrastructure and supporting local schools and community resources. Sister properties Soho Beach House Canouan and Canouan Estate Resort & Villas had already reopened on October 10, 2024, ahead of the main resort.

The Resilience Fund gives travelers booking a stay a direct, transparent way to contribute to the island's long-term recovery rather than simply resuming business as usual. For a small island that took a direct hit from a major hurricane, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan's reopening was as much about the island's future as its own.
