Vintage Port and Madeira: The Immortal Fortified Wines

Most wine is mortal. It rises, peaks, and eventually fades, and even the greatest bottles are best drunk within a human lifetime. The fortified wines of Portugal are the extraordinary exception. Port and Madeira, made by adding grape spirit to arrest or shape their fermentation, can survive not for decades but for centuries, and among collectors they hold a special place as the closest thing wine offers to immortality.

Port comes from the steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, one of the most dramatic wine landscapes on earth. Its greatest expression is Vintage Port, made only from a single outstanding harvest and only in years the leading houses judge worthy of a declaration, which may happen just a few times a decade. Bottled young and full of power, a great Vintage Port needs decades in the cellar to soften, evolving from something dense and fiery into a wine of remarkable depth and perfume. The historic houses behind it, among them Taylor's, Graham's, Fonseca, and Quinta do Noval, whose rare Nacional bottling is one of the most coveted wines in the world, have shaped the category for generations.

Madeira, from the Atlantic island of the same name, is stranger and hardier still. The wine is deliberately heated and exposed to oxygen during its making, a process that would ruin any other wine but renders Madeira almost indestructible. Bottles from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are still opened today and found to be alive and glorious, tasting of caramel, nuts, and dried fruit, cut by a startling freshness. Few wines carry their history so vividly, and a great old Madeira is quite literally a taste of the past.

What makes these wines so compelling to collect is precisely their endurance. A Vintage Port laid down at a child's birth can be opened at their fiftieth, and a Madeira can be passed down through generations, making them among the few wines truly bought for posterity. They are also, relative to the grand reds of France, often remarkably good value, prized more by connoisseurs than by the fashionable market.
