Why the Vintage Matters, and the Truly Great Years

To the casual drinker, the year on a bottle is little more than a date. To the collector, it can be the single most important word on the label. In the great wine regions, the vintage, the year in which the grapes were grown and picked, can mean the difference between a pleasant wine and an immortal one, and learning to read the years is one of the fundamental skills of the pursuit.

The reason lies in the weather. A vine's fruit is shaped entirely by the conditions of a single growing season, the warmth of the summer, the timing of the rain, the health of the harvest, and those conditions vary from one year to the next. In the marginal, cooler climates that produce many of the world's greatest wines, among them Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne, that variation is dramatic. A warm, dry, well timed year yields ripe, concentrated fruit and a wine built to age for decades, while a cold or wet one can leave the same vineyard producing something thin and forgettable. It is why the finest estates will, in a poor year, declassify or even decline to make their top wine at all rather than compromise it.

This is why collectors speak of great vintages in almost reverent tones, and why a legendary year can command many times the price of a modest one from the very same estate. The great vintages become reference points, remembered and sought after for generations, and vintage charts, the tables that rate each year in each region, are among a collector's most consulted tools. A wine's age worthiness, its likely peak, and much of its value all flow from the year on the label.

Yet vintage is not everything, and the wisest collectors hold two truths in balance. In warmer, more consistent regions, the differences between years are far smaller, and even in the classic regions a great producer will often make a fine wine in a difficult year through skill and rigorous selection. The old debate, whether to prefer a top producer in an off year or a modest one in a great year, has no single answer, but it teaches the essential lesson, that producer and vintage must always be read together.
