The Great Estates of the Rhône Valley

Between the great vineyards of Burgundy and the warmth of the Mediterranean, the Rhône River runs south through one of France's most rewarding wine regions. The Rhône Valley has never carried quite the aristocratic reputation of Bordeaux or Burgundy, yet its finest wines rival them for depth and character, and for those willing to look, it remains a source of both extraordinary trophies and genuine value.

The region divides sharply in two. In the steep, narrow northern Rhône, a single grape reigns, Syrah, grown on slopes so precipitous that the vines must be worked by hand and held in place by terraces and stakes. The greatest names here are small and hallowed, the hill of Hermitage, the roasted slope of Côte-Rôtie, and the village of Cornas, where Syrah reaches a power and complexity found nowhere else. The house of Guigal made the region famous with its rare single vineyard bottlings from Côte-Rôtie, wines produced in tiny quantities that now sell for sums to rival the classed growths of Bordeaux, while estates such as Chave have become legends for their Hermitage.

The southern Rhône is a different world, broader, warmer, and built on blends. Here the leading grape is Grenache, joined by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and others, and the most celebrated appellation is Châteauneuf-du-Pape, named for the medieval popes who once summered nearby. Its greatest estates, among them the famously reclusive Château Rayas and the biodynamic pioneer Château de Beaucastel, produce rich, generous wines capable of ageing for decades, and the finest have developed devoted followings among collectors.

What unites the Rhône is a sense of soul over polish. These are wines of place and personality rather than mere technical perfection, tasting of pepper, dark fruit, herbs, and warm stone, and carrying an unmistakable southern warmth. For much of the past century they were quietly overlooked, which meant that a serious wine lover could fill a cellar with genuinely great bottles for a fraction of the cost of Bordeaux or Burgundy.

That is changing. As the trophies of the great Burgundy domaines have risen beyond the reach of most collectors, attention has turned to the Rhône, and prices for its finest wines have followed. Yet compared with the most famous names in France, the region still offers remarkable quality for the money, and its top estates increasingly appear at the great sales.
