The Okura Tokyo: A Mid-Century Icon, Reborn

When the original 1962 Hotel Okura was slated for redevelopment, design lovers around the world mourned its serene mid-century lobby. The Okura Tokyo, reopened in 2019, answered the outcry by faithfully preserving those modernist icons, the lantern-like lights and lacquered screens, within a new tower, and it is now a Leading Hotels of the World Sustainability Leader.

Its restaurants carry the same heritage. Yamazato serves the finest Japanese dining with dedicated tempura, sushi and kaiseki counters; Sazanka, a teppanyaki restaurant opened for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, grills wagyu on a top floor; Toh-Ka-Lin was Japan's first hotel-managed Cantonese restaurant; Nouvelle Epoque continues Okura's pioneering French tradition; and Orchid anchors all-day dining.

For travelers who love design as much as service, the Okura is a pilgrimage.
