The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu occupies one of the more charming conversions in Japanese hospitality: a former 1930s elementary school in the Higashiyama district, its schoolhouse architecture preserved and reimagined as a boutique hotel steps from the great temple of Kiyomizu-dera.

The dining plays on that history. Benoit Kyoto is an outpost of Alain Ducasse's historic Paris bistro, marrying French fare with Japanese aesthetics; K36 The Bar & Rooftop offers rare whiskeys and astonishing views over Kyoto from the old building's roof; and the Restaurant Library, converted from the former auditorium with its high ceilings and bookish air, serves breakfast.

For a Kyoto stay in the heart of the temple district with real character, the Seiryu is a standout.
