São Lourenço do Barrocal is one of Portugal's most celebrated rural retreats, a 200-year-old agricultural estate, or monte, near the medieval hilltown of Monsaraz in the Alentejo. Restored by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, it spreads across farm, vineyards, olive groves and the vast, silent plains of Portugal's interior, and is a Leading Hotels of the World Sustainability Leader.
The dining is rooted in the land. The main restaurant is farm-to-table, built on seasonal organic produce from the estate's own gardens and vineyards under chef Bruno Carvalho; the seasonal Hortelão serves al fresco dinners of estate veal, Alentejo pork and lake fish by the garden; and the Hotel Bar in the old olive-oil mill and a pool bar complete the offering.
For an immersive, farm-driven Alentejo stay, São Lourenço do Barrocal is a benchmark.
