Rosewood Matakauri Earns a Michelin Key Above Lake Wakatipu

Rosewood Matakauri keeps its footprint genuinely small, just eleven designer suites overlooking Lake Wakatipu, seven minutes from Queenstown, and that intimacy earned it One Michelin Key in the 2025 Michelin Guide Hotels program, which the guide describes as marking a very special stay. For a lodge this compact, standing out within Michelin's new hotel-rating framework is a meaningful validation.

The recognition extended beyond Michelin. Rosewood Matakauri was also named among Tatler's World's 101 Best Hotels, a list that draws from a considerably different, more editorially driven selection process than Michelin's own criteria. Earning both distinctions in the same period suggests the lodge's appeal crosses genuinely different types of scrutiny.

Rosewood took over hospitality operations at Matakauri, along with sister properties Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers, effective December 1, 2023, after the properties operated for years as Robertson Lodges. Matakauri's Michelin Key came less than two years into that transition, a fast validation of Rosewood's stewardship of an already-respected lodge.
