ESPACIO The Hakone Geihinkan Rin Poh Ki Ryu is among the most exclusive retreats in Japan, a sanctuary of just eight private villas hidden deep in a forested Hakone valley. Guests descend some 100 metres into the ravine aboard a monorail built specially for the property, arriving at villas enveloped in silence but for the nearby river.

The experience is entirely private. Each villa has its own onsen fed by the rare Dogashima hot spring and its own pool, with royal-class butler service throughout. Dining is served in-villa: an exquisite multi-course kaiseki dinner celebrating the seasons, with a choice of Japanese or Western breakfast sets. Traditional arts, from Kumiko woodwork to washi paper, line the retreat.
