Nowhere is the collector car market more visible, or more theatrical, than at auction. When a rare automobile crosses the block at one of the great sales, the bidding can climb into the tens of millions in a matter of minutes, and the result sets the value of every similar car in the world. For collectors, the auction is where reputations and fortunes are made.

The Houses

A handful of auction houses dominate the top of the market. RM Sotheby's, Gooding and Company, and Bonhams stage the most important sales, timed to coincide with major events such as Monterey Car Week, the Amelia Island gathering, and the great European meetings. These houses spend months researching and presenting each car, because at this level provenance and authenticity are everything.

How a Sale Works

The mechanics are straightforward but high stakes. Each car carries a pre sale estimate and, often, a confidential reserve, the minimum the seller will accept. Bidders compete until the hammer falls, and the winning bid, plus the house's buyer's premium, becomes the final price. A car that fails to meet its reserve goes unsold, while one that exceeds every expectation can rewrite the record books on the spot.

What Drives the Numbers

The values can seem impossible until you understand what buyers are paying for. Rarity comes first, a car that is one of a handful, or truly unique, commands a premium no ordinary model can. Then comes provenance, the history of who owned and raced the car, followed by originality and condition. A machine that combines all of these, a rare model with a great racing history in exceptional original condition, is the kind that produces the eight figure sales that make headlines around the world.
