The coachbuilt cars of Rolls-Royce and Bentley work the same way, as do the most extreme creations from Bugatti, Pagani, and Koenigsegg. These are cars that appreciate the moment they are delivered, precisely because so few people were ever allowed to acquire one.

The Real Currency

The lesson of this tier is that at the very summit of the market, the true currency is relationship. Collectors cultivate their standing with the great marques over years, understanding that it is the key to the cars that can never be bought outright. For the makers, it is a way to ensure their finest work goes to the owners most likely to cherish it, and for the buyers, an invitation to that list is a status symbol in its own right.
