Mandarin Oriental, Old Cataract, Aswan Continues Its Agatha Christie Legacy Through Renovation

Few hotels anywhere can claim a literary connection as concrete as the one at Mandarin Oriental, Old Cataract, Aswan. Agatha Christie wrote part of Death on the Nile while staying at the hotel, and its terrace overlooking the Nile and Elephantine Island remains recognizably the same setting that shaped her writing, even as the building around it changes hands and undergoes restoration.

Mandarin Oriental took over management of the property, formerly Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, in 2026, and the hotel continues welcoming guests in its heritage Palace Wing while the Nile Wing undergoes a full renovation. Full completion of the project is targeted for July 2027, giving the hotel a multi-year runway to bring the entire property up to a single standard without closing it down completely in the meantime.

The transition is part of a broader Mandarin Oriental expansion into Egypt, which also includes a new Nile river cruise program with three, four, and seven-night itineraries between Aswan and Luxor, and the future Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo, targeted for 2027. For travelers drawn to Egypt's Nile Valley specifically for its literary and historical weight, the Old Cataract's continued operation through its own renovation keeps one of the region's most storied hotels accessible even mid-transformation.
