Belmond Villa San Michele reopens on April 28, 2026, following an 18-month renovation of the 15th-century former Franciscan monastery above Florence. Luigi Fragola Architects led the redesign in collaboration with Belmond's own design team, working to preserve the villa's Michelangelo-inspired façade, its arched terrace, and the original chapel, cloister, and loggias while completely reworking the guest experience inside.
All 39 rooms and suites have been redesigned with hand-finished details and rare artifacts woven throughout, and the property is introducing its first dedicated spa, a Guerlain outpost set on a nearby hillside overlooking the city. It's a meaningful addition for a hotel that has always leaned on its setting, a hillside monastery in Fiesole with sweeping views over Florence, as much as any single amenity.
The reopening positions Villa San Michele as one of four Italian hotels in Belmond's new Villeggiatura by Train program for 2026, pairing a night aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express with a stay at the property. For travelers who have visited before the renovation, the reopening is worth revisiting specifically for how carefully the monastery's original architecture appears to have been protected through the process.
