Not every important private jet is a globe crossing flagship. The aircraft that quietly move the most people are the midsize jets, and in that category the Cessna Citation family has outsold every rival for decades. Its newest member, the Citation Ascend, recently earned FAA certification, and it is already reshaping the fleets that travelers actually fly.
A New Take on a Proven Formula
The Citation Ascend is the latest addition to Textron Aviation's bestselling business jet family, and it improves on the formula in almost every measure. New Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D engines give it a four passenger range of 1,940 nautical miles and a maximum cruise speed of 441 knots, enough to connect most major cities within a continent in a single hop. It carries up to twelve passengers and cruises as high as 45,000 feet, above much of the weather that slows commercial travel.
A Cabin That Punches Above Its Class
Where the Ascend stands out is inside. Buyers can choose between a flat floor for maximum legroom or a dropped aisle for extra standing height, a rare degree of flexibility in a midsize jet. Cabin windows are nearly fifteen percent larger than before, quiet cabin technology brings sound levels closer to those of a large jet, and every main cabin seat offers wireless smartphone charging, a feature Cessna says is exclusive to the Ascend in its category. The Clairity cabin management system puts lighting, temperature, window shades, and entertainment under a single control.
A Modern Flight Deck
Pilots fly the Ascend through a Garmin G5000 avionics suite with touchscreen controllers, synthetic vision, and full flight regime autothrottles that reduce workload from takeoff to landing. Longer maintenance intervals, including engine overhauls as far apart as 6,000 hours, keep the aircraft flying and lower the cost of running it.
Why It Matters
The Ascend's significance goes beyond its specifications. Textron Aviation and NetJets signed a record breaking agreement for up to 1,500 Cessna Citation jets, which means many travelers who fly fractionally or by jet card will find themselves aboard an Ascend without ever choosing it by name. For the private aviation market, the arrival of a better midsize jet touches far more journeys than the debut of any flagship. It is the workhorse of private travel, quietly redefined.
